Unleashing Potential: Port Harcourt’s Incredible Drama and Musical Theatre Classes with Helen Dennis

In the vibrant city of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, a remarkable educational initiative is unfolding under the dynamic leadership of Helen Dennis. As the CrEd Head for Port Harcourt, Helen is harnessing the transformative power of the arts through drama and musical theatre, equipping young minds with essential 21st-century skills while forging a connection to global standards.

A Program Rooted in Excellence

Active Port Harcourt’s drama and musical theatre class is not just an avenue for artistic expression; it’s a comprehensive program grounded in a curriculum designed by Creative Education International (CrEd). This initiative is affiliated with Trinity College London, a prestigious institution known for its exceptional standards in arts education. Through this affiliation, students in Port Harcourt can earn internationally recognised qualifications that validate their skills and achievements.

Helen Dennis, a dedicated professional with a background in Theatre Arts from the University of Port Harcourt, has transformed her passion for drama into a powerful educational vehicle. After beginning her career teaching English Language and Creative Arts, she expanded her horizons by exploring the finance sector. However, her unwavering commitment to education brought her back to her true calling, blending her extensive knowledge in drama with her passion for empowering young creatives.

“Young people today need creativity as much as they need literacy and numeracy,” Helen shares. “Our programs at Active Port Harcourt aim to provide an environment where students can explore their artistic capabilities, all while developing critical life skills that will serve them in all aspects of their lives.”

Empowerment through Creative Expression

Under Helen’s guidance, the program emphasises communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity—skills that are increasingly vital in today’s complex world. By creating a supportive and nurturing atmosphere, CrEd International empowers participants to unlock their full potential and embrace their artistic gifts.

“Education should be about unlocking potential and inspiring creativity,” says Alan Montanaro, CrEd Director based in Malta. “With programs like those spearheaded by Helen in Port Harcourt, we are on the forefront of reshaping education in Nigeria, ensuring that it is holistic and student-centric.”

The curriculum includes a diverse range of developmental drama activities designed to improve students’ expressiveness, confidence, and ability to work collaboratively. Through musical theatre, participants not only learn performance skills but also how to understand narratives, express emotions, and engage with audiences.

An International Perspective

Helen’s work in Port Harcourt is supported by an international network of directors who recognise the importance of such programs. Vicky Stroud, CrEd Director in South Africa, notes, “The affiliation with Trinity College London enriches the learning experience for students in Port Harcourt. It provides them access to a global framework that crucially validates their efforts and achievements.”

Furthermore, Lisa Semple, CrEd Director in Ireland and the U.K., emphasizes how these programs influence the educational landscape. “Helen and her team are examples of creative thinking and innovative practices that can inspire not just the local community but serve as a model for other regions. This is the future of education.”

A Lasting Impact

As CrEd International continues to develop drama and musical theatre in Port Harcourt, Helen Dennis stands at the forefront of this creative evolution. Her expertise in acting, English, and management positions the academy as a hub for artistic and personal growth.

“By merging creativity with education, we are equipping the next generation with tools they need to navigate their futures,” Helen states proudly. “The response from the students has been overwhelming. You can see them blossoming, both as individuals and as performers.”

With each class, Active Port Harcourt is not only nurturing a new generation of artists but is also shaping confident, articulate, and innovative young leaders ready to take on the world. This vibrant program is a testament to how the arts can drive significant changes in education, inspiring not only students but also the wider community.

In a world increasingly driven by technology and information, initiatives like those at  Port Harcourt remind us of the irreplaceable value of creativity and human expression. As the program flourishes, it paves a promising path forward, enriching the lives of countless children in Nigeria and preparing them for a bright future on both local and international stages.
