Shakespeare SLAM: Unleashing the Bard’s Magic in African & Indian Schools
Calling all schools in Africa and India! Get ready to embark on a theatrical journey like no other with the Shakespeare SLAM competition, brought to you by CrEd, Creative Education International. This exhilarating event will empower students to take charge of their own Shakespearean productions, fostering creativity, teamwork, and a deep appreciation for the works of the legendary playwright.
Unleashing the Bard’s Magic:
The Shakespeare SLAM competition has already taken the world by storm, starting in India in 2018 and now making its way to Africa. Schools in Morocco, Egypt, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, and Namibia will have the opportunity to participate in this remarkable event next year. The aim is to make Shakespeare accessible to all through performance, while also improving the standards of each production year after year with the guidance of esteemed adjudicators.
Student Empowerment:
Unlike traditional school plays, the Shakespeare SLAM encourages students to take ownership of every aspect of their production. From directing to stage management, lighting design to acting, students will develop a wide range of skills associated with the theatre. By allowing students to lead, the competition provides a unique and immersive learning experience that goes beyond the classroom.
The Process:
Participating schools will prepare a 35-minute abridged version of a Shakespeare play, using the original text provided by CrEd International. Schools can choose from a list of scripts curated by CrEd, including renowned works such as Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Tempest, and more. To ensure a smooth process, CrEd experts will conduct a Director’s & Cast workshop within ten days of registration, familiarising students with the festival rules, drama specifics, and Shakespearean nuances.
The Journey:
The Shakespeare SLAM journey consists of four key steps. First, schools receive publicity and submit their registration and play title. Next, a teacher in charge and a student director are assigned by the school, and the cast is selected (with a maximum of 50 students). Scripts are then supplied to the schools, and a Teacher/Director Workshop is conducted to provide guidance and support. Finally, performance dates are allocated to each school, and the magic unfolds on the much-anticipated performance day.
The Grand Finale:
On the performance day, three plays will be showcased in one slot, with the running order decided just before the event. Each play will have a duration of 35 minutes, ensuring a captivating and dynamic experience for all. Schools will also have the opportunity to sell tickets to students, parents, and family members at a nominal cost, creating a sense of excitement and community involvement.
